PXSTL Event Transformation: Paper from Plants, Art through Interaction
August 23, 2014 10am-2pm at Pulitzer Art Museum Lot
Transformation offered a tutorial of the paper making process, a paper pulp painting activity, and an installation of plants found in the St. Louis City landscape that examines the urban nature of vacant lots as a metaphor of growth and vitality in St. Louis. The event was free and open to the public.
The St.Louis iteration of Kokedama in your landscape was inspired by Megan Singleton's desire to collect and identify ruderal plants found growing in vacant lots in St. Louis City, and to share this knowledge using the Japanese Bonsai method of containing plants into small moss balls to distribute them to the public. Participants received a sheet of handmade paper with their plant which informed them of the edible or medicinal properties of the plants she collected. In return for this plant I only asked participants to email me a photograph of the plant in its new home and location coordinates, which will in turn be mapped and displayed on this website.
The plants collected and distributed included English Plantain, Chicory, Purslane, Pepper Grass, Prickly Lettuce, Ragweed, Lambs Quarter, Camphor weed, Yarrow, and Common Knotgrass.
Participants please email images and the location of your plant's new home to kokedamainyourlandscape@gmail.com
